15th International Space Syntax Symposium Malaysia - Singapore Trip Synopsis
Held in conjunction and in collaboration with the 15th International Space Syntax Symposium (SSS15), hosted by the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru, and chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifah Salwa Syed Mahdzar, the Future Cities Laboratory Global (FCL Global), Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC), will convene a knowledge-sharing programme on 12 June 2026 (2:00–5:00 PM) at the CREATE Campus, Singapore.
Conceived as a platform for dialogue, reflection, and interdisciplinary exchange, the programme brings together symposium participants alongside researchers, scholars, and practitioners from FCL Global and leading Singapore-based institutions to engage with ongoing work related to Space Syntax, urban spatial analytics, spatial cognition, and spatial behaviour. Extending conversations initiated during SSS15, the programme seeks to situate global perspectives within the broader urban and socio-spatial contexts of Malaysia, Singapore, Southeast Asia, and the Global South.
The programme reflects the growing interest in Space Syntax methodologies and related spatial analytical approaches across the region, particularly in response to rapidly urbanising cities and emerging interdisciplinary urban research agendas. Framed around the symposium theme of “Connecting the Global South,” the event foregrounds opportunities for knowledge exchange across diverse urban contexts while exploring how spatial thinking may contribute to broader discussions on urban experience, human behaviour, mobility, and evidence-based urban futures. In this respect, the programme also acknowledges the increasing relevance of cross-border and regional urban research, including ongoing studies and collaborations relating to cities such as Kuala Lumpur and the wider metropolitan networks of Southeast Asia.
The programme will include an introduction to FCL Global and the Architectural Cognition in Practice (ACP) module, followed by presentations from researchers representing the Singapore urban science and design research community, including the Singapore-ETH Centre, National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and Singapore Management University (SMU)
